In the world of commercial roofing, much of the focus is often placed on the visible components—the high-performance membranes and sophisticated flashings. However, as the experts at the Siplast RISE Center emphasize, a long-term roofing system relies heavily on a sound and suitable substrate. When that substrate is structural concrete, achieving the right texture is not just a preference; it is a technical necessity for proper bonding.
Concrete Surface Profiles (CSPs) are a standardized way to measure this texture, using a scale developed by the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI). This scale, ranging from 1 to 10, describes the roughness of a concrete surface based on its peak-to-valley depth.
Finding the "Sweet Spot": CSP 2 to 5
For roofing applications, the goal is to achieve an optimal range of roughness, typically between CSP 2 and CSP 5. Within this range, the concrete provides a necessary "interlock" for adhesives, low-rise foams, and vapor retarders. This increased concrete surface profile improves the mechanical bond, helping ensure that the roof system remains securely attached under environmental stressors.
When the surface profile deviates from this range, the risks to the building enclosure increase:
Excessively Smooth (CSP 1): Surfaces that are too smooth lack the required texture for sufficient adhesion. This can lead to weak bonds that fail under wind uplift, resulting in wrinkles, buckles, or lateral water migration.
Excessively Rough (> CSP 5): Surfaces that are too rough can lead to significantly higher material consumption and costs. Furthermore, very rough profiles may actually reduce the contact area for self-adhered materials, compromising the integrity of the seal.
