Challenge

Swedish is the largest nonprofit health care provider in the greater Seattle area with several hospital campuses. Swedish’s innovative care has made it a regional referral center for leading-edge procedures such as robotic-assisted surgery and personalized treatment in cardiovascular care, cancer care, neuroscience, orthopedics, high-risk obstetrics, pediatric specialties, organ transplantation, and clinical research. In 2009, Swedish broke ground on a new state-of-the- art medical center in Issaquah. A trusted roof system was required to protect the 200,000+ yearly patients and medical equipment of the world-class acute-care medical facility. An accelerated construction schedule was also required to beat the onset of winter.

Solution

Siplast delivered a high-performance roof system with dependable waterproofing and overburden solutions to help protect the outdoor spaces where patients, staff, and visitors can gather.

  • Reliable roof for long-term performance
The hospital’s main roof was constructed with the robust and resilient Siplast Paradiene® 20 EG/30 FR TG System. Siplast liquid-applied Parapro PMMA Flashing was applied to provide high-performance waterproofing protection.
  • Customized overburden solutions for pedestrian spaces
Pedestrian roof areas were waterproofed with Siplast Paradiene® 20 EG/20 TG and a paver overburden solution. Vegetated roof areas were waterproofed with Siplast Teranap, our modified bitumen waterproofing ply designed for use in homogeneous multi-layer modified bitumen plaza deck waterproofing membrane systems.
  • Completed on a tight timeframe
The project was completed within the tight turnaround schedule, ahead of the winter season.

Swedish Hospital’s Issaquah campus facility was able to meet the health-care needs of the community with its brand-new medical center, and continue with its life-saving procedures and treatments on schedule.

Green Roof Systems

Teranap Plaza Deck Waterproofing & Green Roofing Systems

In the 1970s, environmental awareness began to grow, and so did the use of green roof systems as a way to manage environmental impact. Of course, both plaza deck and green roof applications create significant waterproofing challenges. That's why Siplast Research and Development took their pioneering SBS-modified bitumen technology and applied it to the design of a waterproofing membrane for plaza deck and green roof applications: Teranap.
